A zone defines a geographic area. A zone can represent an area as small as a shipping location, or as large as an entire country, but cannot span countries.
A zone definition consists of descriptive information and geographical location specifications. You can specify the geographical location of a zone using any of the following information:
Shipping locations
Exact zip/postal codes
Zip/postal code ranges
Distance range
City (or cities)
States or provinces
Entire country
Zones in Transportation Manager can be used for a variety of purposes:
Origin and destination for a tariff lane
Origin and destination for lane constraints
Itinerary point for delivery schedule itinerary
Exclusion zone for tariff, service, equipment type
Dispatch zone for carrier domicile
Tax regions
Time zones
Defining daylight saving time observance
G/L regions
Business hours updates
Notes:
Generic zones, which are used for routing purposes, support location-based zones. Other zone groups such as Time Zones, Daylight Saving Zones, Business Hours Zones, G/L Regions or Tax Zones do not support location based zones.
Zones can be used for a variety of purposes in Transportation Manager, but zones defined using a distance range should be used exclusively as the destination point for tariff lanes.
List
By default, the list of zones is sorted in ascending order by the Zone ID field.
For information on icons and functionalities available on the list pages, see Web Interface lists.
Properties
In the create or duplicate mode, the zone properties are displayed on a screen with the following tabs:
General: Displays zone header information
Geographical Area: Displays a list of geographical areas
Location: Displays a list of shipping locations
A zone can be defined as a collection of states, cities, zip codes, or shipping locations (or a combination of these items).
Notes:
In the create mode, the country of the location is used as the default for the country code on the General tab.
In the create mode, if neither the Geographical Area tab nor Location tab is accessed, or when the Geographical Area tab is accessed but no change is made to the default entry, the system automatically creates a default geographical area entry. This default entry will cover the entire country when State/Province is not defined at the zone header, or covers the entire state or province when State/Province is defined at the zone header.
In edit or view mode, the zone properties display only zone header information, without tabs. The list of geographic details for an existing zone is accessed by using the Geo-Areas button from the list of zones. See "List of Geographical Areas for Zone (Employee)"
When you duplicate a zone, its associated geographical areas and locations are also duplicated.
In update mode, when all existing geo-areas for the zone refer to the same state or province, only two values are allowed for State/Province field: the State/Province code shared by the existing geo-areas and blank. If the existing geo-areas refer to multiple states or provinces, the State/Province field for the zone is not editable.
